Samsung explains Galaxy camera resolution drops to 12MP
Samsung has addressed reports regarding Galaxy smartphones automatically switching from 24MP to 12MP photo resolutions. This behavior occurs even when users have manually selected 24MP via the Camera Assistant app.
The company explained that this resolution reduction is a dynamic measure taken to ensure consistent image quality under specific conditions. Key triggers for this switch include the use of zoom, low-light environments, flash photography, motion photos, close-ups, and burst mode.
Additionally, Samsung noted that the device will lower resolution if the surface temperature exceeds 45°C to manage heat. This issue was highlighted following user reports involving the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and has also been noted in relation to the Galaxy S26 Ultra. To maintain 24MP settings, Samsung suggests using 1x zoom and allowing a brief interval between consecutive shots.
