Smartphone manufacturers raise prices due to memory chip shortages
Major smartphone manufacturers, including Samsung, Google, and Oppo, are implementing price increases across several product lines. This trend is primarily driven by a global shortage and rising costs of memory chips, specifically DRAM and NAND flash. The surge in component prices is largely attributed to the massive hardware investments required for artificial intelligence data center infrastructure.
Samsung has raised prices for its Galaxy S26 series in multiple markets, including the US, Europe, and Canada, with increases ranging from $100 to $250. Additionally, Samsung's budget-friendly Galaxy A series has seen price hikes globally. Google has also adjusted pricing for the Pixel 10a, raising it by approximately $100 due to supply chain constraints.
Oppo is expected to see significant price jumps for its upcoming Find X10 series in Europe, with some models potentially costing 60% more than their predecessors. Industry experts note that while manufacturers previously lowered prices mid-cycle, the current chip shortage is forcing a reversal of this long-standing industry norm.
