Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 introduces antioxidant tracking feature

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 8 features a new Antioxidant Index designed to estimate a user’s intake of fruits and vegetables. The feature works by using the device’s BioActive Sensor to perform multi-wavelength absorption spectroscopy via a five-second thumb scan.

The sensor utilizes yellow, blue, purple, and green LED lights to illuminate the skin. By detecting how carotenoids—pigments found in certain fruits and vegetables—absorb and reflect these wavelengths, the watch calculates a score from 0 to 100. Samsung notes that using the thumb helps minimize interference from melanin and hemoglobin. While the index serves as an indicator of nutrient intake, the company cautions that factors such as stress, alcohol consumption, and UV exposure can also influence the results.
