Samsung readies Galaxy Z Fold 8 lineup with wider model and thicker glass

Samsung is preparing a three‑model foldable lineup for its upcoming Unpacked event on July 22. The range includes the Galaxy Z Fold 8 “Wide,” a Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra that retains the previous form factor, and the Galaxy Z Flip 8.

The Fold 8 “Wide” is reported to use 60 µm ultra‑thin glass for its inner display, a 30% increase over the 45 µm glass on the Ultra and earlier models, aiming to reduce the visible crease and improve durability. Leaked dimensions show the Wide version has a broader inner screen, positioned to compete with a rumored iPhone foldable.

FCC filings identify the devices as SM‑F971U (Fold 8 Wide) and SM‑F976U (Fold 8 Ultra) and confirm a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset, 5G, Wi‑Fi 7, UWB, satellite NB‑NTN, a 4,800 mAh battery with 45 W fast charging, dual 50 MP rear cameras, IP48 rating, and Android 17 with One UI 9. Additional FCC approvals cover the Z Flip 8 (SM‑F776U) and upcoming Galaxy Watch 9 and Watch Ultra 2 models.

Analysts note that the “Ultra” naming may overstate the differences from the previous Fold 7, raising concerns about price perception, while the wider model’s thicker glass represents Samsung’s effort to address foldable durability issues.
