Samsung faces supply shortages due to Galaxy Z Fold8 success

Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8 series is experiencing unprecedented market success, with pre-orders breaking previous records. In South Korea, the wide-aspect Fold8 model accounts for approximately 70% of sales in the series. This surge in demand has created a significant supply chain crisis, specifically regarding Display Driver ICs (DDIs).

To maintain production, Samsung is reportedly redirecting component allocations originally intended for its 2027 smartphone lineup to satisfy current orders. The shortage is attributed to production capacity limits at Taiwan's UMC, which manufactures the specialized 22nm chips designed by Samsung's System LSI division.

Technologically, the new series features Flex Titanium technology to improve durability and reduce weight, with the Fold8 Ultra reaching a record thinness of 4.1mm. While the hardware has been well-received, some users have noted high repair costs for screen replacements in certain markets. Additionally, the success of the Fold8 has positively impacted component suppliers like Haechitech, which reported a 24.4% increase in revenue due to increased chip shipments.
