Samsung Group establishes Chief AI Officer roles to accelerate AI transformation

Samsung Group is accelerating its AI transformation (AX) strategy by establishing the new Chief AI Officer (CAIO) position within several of its IT subsidiaries. This move aims to centralize and oversee internal AI operations and AX implementation across the group.

Samsung Display has appointed Vice President Noh Chul-rae, head of the AX Research Institute, as CAIO. The institute focuses on developing AI-based automation technologies and improving manufacturing productivity. Similarly, Samsung Electro-Mechanics has named Vice President Jang Woo-seok, head of the Central Research Institute, to the CAIO role to lead its AI-driven process automation efforts.

This restructuring follows a broader ‘AI Grand Transformation’ strategy initiated in June 2026 under the leadership of Chairman Lee Jae-yong. The strategy involves integrating external generative AI services and establishing dedicated AI organizations within each subsidiary. To reinforce this priority, Samsung Electronics has upgraded its AX team to the AX/PI (Process Innovation) Center and significantly increased the weight of ‘AX competency enhancement’ in executive performance evaluations, raising it from a maximum of 5 points to 20 points.
