Samsung Heavy Industries and KIRO partner on shipbuilding robotics

The Korea Institute of Robot and Convergence (KIRO) and Samsung Heavy Industries have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to jointly develop and demonstrate future shipbuilding and robotics technologies. The agreement, signed at the Samsung Heavy Industries Geoje Shipyard, aims to integrate the research infrastructure and technical capabilities of both organizations to enhance productivity and safety within the shipbuilding and maritime industries.

Key areas of collaboration include the development of specialized autonomous task robots for shipbuilding, industrial manufacturing humanoids, and AI-driven robot solutions. The partnership will involve mutual personnel exchange, shared use of research facilities and equipment, technical policy consultation, and the joint hosting of academic events. This follows a history of cooperation between the two entities dating back to 2015, which included the development of mobile welding robots for confined spaces.
