Samsung Heavy Industries partners with Seoul National University for maritime R&D

Samsung Heavy Industries is establishing the ‘SHI-SNU Future Ship Technology Global Cooperation Research Center’ in partnership with Seoul National University. The agreement, signed at the Seoul National University Gwanak Campus, aims to conduct long-term research combining maritime engineering with energy technologies.

The new center will focus on decarbonization, eco-friendly vessels, and next-generation fuel technologies, while also building research networks with international universities and institutions. This initiative complements the recently established ‘SHI-KAIST Next-Generation Ship Research Center,’ which focuses on artificial intelligence, robotics, and autonomous navigation.

By dividing research responsibilities, Samsung Heavy Industries intends to create a dual-track R&D structure: the KAIST center will handle AI and smart manufacturing, while the Seoul National University center will lead fundamental research in energy transition and decarbonization.
