Samsung launches 990 SSD with up to 7,250 MB/s read speed
Samsung Electronics has introduced the Samsung 990 SSD, positioned as an entry‑level PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive available in 1 TB and 2 TB capacities. The drives use a PCIe 4.0 x4 interface, QLC V‑NAND memory and a modified Piccolo controller. Sequential read speeds reach 7,150 MB/s (1 TB) and 7,250 MB/s (2 TB), with sequential writes up to 6,450 MB/s for both models. Random performance is rated up to 700 K/1 100 K IOPS (1 TB) and 850 K/1 200 K IOPS (2 TB). Samsung claims a 38 % improvement in power efficiency over the 990 PRO. Endurance is rated at 400 TBW for the 1 TB model and 800 TBW for the 2 TB model, backed by a three‑year limited warranty. Prices are US $269.99 for the 1 TB version and US $529.99 for the 2 TB version; Philippine suggested retail prices are PHP 19,075 and PHP 37,678 respectively. The SSDs began global availability on 14 July 2024, with launch announcements in Austria, the United States, France and the Philippines. Samsung’s Magician software provides drive health monitoring, firmware updates and data migration tools.
