Samsung Launches UFS 5.0 Storage with 10.8 GB/s Speed for AI‑Enabled Phones

Samsung announced the world’s first UFS 5.0 storage solution, delivering up to 10.8 GB/s sequential read bandwidth—more than double the speed of the current UFS 4.1 standard. The high‑performance flash memory is built to meet the growing data‑throughput demands of on‑device artificial‑intelligence applications such as large language models, real‑time translation and generative photography.

Mass production of the UFS 5.0 chip is slated to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026, with Samsung’s Galaxy S27 flagship series expected to be the first consumer devices to incorporate the technology in early 2027. The storage modules will be available in capacities up to 1 TB and include new features such as inline hashing for data‑integrity verification and link equalization to stabilise high‑speed connections. The chip also promises a 40 % improvement in power efficiency.

The new standard is supported by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 processor family and is expected to be compatible with other emerging platforms, including MediaTek’s Dimensity series and Samsung’s own Exynos line. Industry analysts view the launch as a critical step toward reducing reliance on cloud‑based AI processing by enabling more sophisticated workloads directly on smartphones, tablets, XR headsets and AI‑powered wearables.
