Samsung launches UFS 5.0 storage, promising double‑speed and lower power for next‑gen smartphones

Samsung announced its first Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 5.0 chips, delivering sequential read speeds of up to 10.8 GB/s and write speeds of up to 9.5 GB/s—more than twice the performance of the current UFS 4.1 standard. The new modules are 40 % more energy‑efficient thanks to clock‑gating and multi‑voltage technologies, and their footprint is 16.7 % smaller (7.5 × 13 × 0.9 mm). Production of up to 1 TB capacity parts will begin in the fourth quarter of 2026.

UFS 5.0 is positioned as a key enabler for on‑device AI, large language models and high‑resolution media in flagship smartphones, XR headsets and wearables. Samsung expects the technology to debut in its upcoming Galaxy S27 series and other premium devices, improving app launch times, large‑file transfers and AI‑driven features while extending battery life.
