Samsung One UI 9 PIN lockout 13 attempts factory reset security policy

Samsung Electronics announced that its One UI 9 interface, based on Android 17, reduces the number of allowed PIN, password or pattern attempts to 13. After the fifth failed entry the device imposes a temporary lock that grows from one minute to five minutes, fifteen minutes, thirty minutes, ninety minutes, four hours, twelve hours and finally 24 hours after the twelfth attempt. The thirteenth incorrect entry permanently disables the phone; the only way to regain access is a factory reset, which also triggers Factory Reset Protection requiring the original Samsung and Google accounts. Identical consecutive wrong entries are counted as a single attempt. Samsung says the change is intended to deter brute‑force attacks. The policy currently applies to devices shipped with One UI 9 pre‑installed; Samsung has not confirmed whether older models will receive the update.
