Samsung Medical Center hosts international symposium on Value-Based Healthcare

Samsung Medical Center (SMC) Cancer Hospital recently held its first international symposium on Value-Based Healthcare (VBHC). The event focused on shifting medical evaluation from traditional metrics, such as survival rates and recurrence, to include the actual health outcomes and quality of life experienced by patients.

SMC has been utilizing Patient-Reported Outcomes (PRO) since 2018, specifically for breast cancer patients, to track symptoms like pain, fatigue, and emotional well-being. Following its achievement of the first ICHOM (International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement) certification in South Korea for metastatic breast cancer, the hospital plans to expand these value-based practices to other cancer types, including lung cancer.

The symposium featured international experts from institutions such as Stanford University and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. Discussions covered clinical registries, AI-driven lung cancer research, multidisciplinary care coordination, and geriatric oncology models to better implement patient-centered care in clinical settings.
