Samsung Medical Center launches AI chatbot for PICC management

Samsung Medical Center's Cancer Hospital has introduced a KakaoTalk-based AI chatbot service designed to assist patients undergoing chemotherapy with Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) management. PICC is a catheter inserted into a vein in the arm that reaches a large vein near the heart, essential for administering toxic chemotherapy drugs or long-term treatment. However, patients face risks of complications such as infection or blockage, with international studies reporting that approximately 17% of cancer patients experience PICC-related complications.

The chatbot addresses six key topics based on frequently asked questions from telephone consultations: catheter management, symptoms, insertion site abnormalities, heparin injection, daily life, and emergency room visits. To aid understanding, the service provides photos and videos for complex instructions. If the AI cannot answer a specific query, it directs users to hospital contact information for medical consultation rather than providing speculative answers.

A preliminary survey of users showed a 96% satisfaction rate, with 100% of respondents stating they would recommend the service to others. A previous pilot study involving 56 patients and caregivers was published in the journal JMIR Cancer.
