Samsung ordered to pay Swatch Group $11.6 million for trademark infringement
The High Court of Justice of England and Wales has ordered Samsung Electronics to pay 11.6 million dollars to the Swatch Group following a long-running legal battle over trademark infringements. The ruling, made public on August 26, addresses the use of counterfeit digital watch faces on Samsung's Galaxy App Store.
Between October 2015 and February 2019, various applications imitating Swatch Group brands—including Longines, Omega, Tissot, Breguet, Blancpain, Jaquet Droz, Glashütte Original, Hamilton, and Mido—were available for download. These watch face apps were downloaded approximately 160,000 times across the United Kingdom and the European Union.
While Swatch Group had originally sought 170 million dollars in damages, the court's decision significantly differs from Samsung's initial offer of 301 dollars. Swatch Group representatives stated that the company had attempted to minimize the severity of the counterfeiting throughout the proceedings.
