Samsung Electronics raises advanced chip prices up to 15%

Samsung Electronics has increased prices for several of its advanced contract chipmaking services by up to 15 percent. The price hikes, which took effect in July, apply to the 4-nanometer SF4 and 5-nanometer SF5 processes. Customers in the United States and China are facing the highest increases, ranging from 10 to 15 percent, while Taiwanese clients are seeing rises between 5 and 10 percent. Older 8-nanometer technology also saw price increases of nearly 10 percent.

The price adjustments are driven by surging demand for artificial intelligence chips, which has constrained the manufacturing capacity of industry leader TSMC. As TSMC's advanced capacity is largely pre-sold to major clients like Apple, Nvidia, and AMD, Samsung has gained increased pricing leverage. This scarcity is particularly impactful for Chinese firms, which face heightened reliance on overseas foundries due to U.S. export controls on semiconductor equipment.

Separately, Samsung is considering a massive shareholder return program. Analysts estimate the plan could involve distributing between 100 trillion and 200 trillion won (approximately $72 billion to $144.5 billion) annually, potentially through special cash dividends and share buybacks. The company's net cash position reached 167.59 trillion won by the end of June 2026, bolstered by high demand for high-bandwidth memory used in AI infrastructure.
