Samsung cancels variable aperture camera plans for Galaxy S27 series

Samsung has reportedly decided to abandon plans to reintroduce variable aperture camera technology in its upcoming Galaxy S27 series, including the flagship S27 Ultra. While earlier rumors suggested the feature—which allows for physical adjustment of light intake—would return to compete with anticipated hardware updates from Apple's iPhone 18 Pro, internal evaluations have led to a different strategy.

According to reports citing supply chain sources and ETNews, Samsung tested modules developed by partners such as MCNEX and Samsung Electro-Mechanics. However, the company concluded that the technology did not offer sufficient practical improvements in image quality to justify its implementation. Key deterrents included high manufacturing costs, increased camera module thickness, and the overall impact on device design.

The decision is further influenced by rising DRAM and memory costs, which are placing pressure on smartphone manufacturers to balance component expenses. Instead of hardware-based aperture changes, Samsung is expected to focus on enhancing camera performance through improved sensors, lens combinations, and advanced software algorithms.
