Samsung SDI secures 1.5GWh ESS supply deal with US Alpha Omega Power

Samsung SDI has signed a 1GWh agreement through its U.S. subsidiary, Samsung SDI America, to supply energy storage system (ESS) solutions to Alpha Omega Power (AOP). This follows an initial contract signed late last year, bringing the total cumulative supply volume to 1.5GWh.

The systems, known as Samsung Battery Box (SBB) 1.7, will be manufactured at the StarPlus Energy plant in Kokomo, Indiana, with deliveries expected by the end of this year. AOP plans to deploy these solutions in large-scale power projects scheduled to begin next year in Texas and other Western U.S. markets to support grid reliability and rising electricity demand.

The SBB 1.7 features high-nickel nickel-cobalt-aluminum (NCA) prismatic batteries, offering a 17% increase in energy density compared to the previous SBB 1.5 model while maintaining the same 20-foot footprint. The solution incorporates AI-powered algorithms for anomaly detection and life prediction, alongside proprietary Enhanced Direct Injection (EDI) technology for improved fire safety. Samsung SDI currently serves as a key non-Chinese supplier of prismatic batteries in the North American market.
