Samsung SDI UPS batteries clear UL fire‑safety test
Samsung SDI announced that its uninterruptible‑power‑supply (UPS) batteries have met every criterion of UL Solutions’ Indoor Large‑Scale Fire Test (LSFT), becoming the first product worldwide to do so. In the test, a battery module was deliberately ignited and fully burned, yet fire did not spread to adjacent racks, no gas was released, and no explosion or rupture occurred. The batteries self‑extinguished even without sprinkler activation.
The company attributes the result to its proprietary system‑structure design that blocks heat transfer, the use of lithium‑manganese‑oxide (LMO) chemistry, an aluminum case, and venting mechanisms. Samsung SDI said the certification validates its “differentiated safety technology” and will help it compete for supply contracts in AI data‑center and energy‑storage‑system (ESS) markets. A company spokesperson added that customers can rely on the solution for critical power needs.
The achievement comes as major tech firms and data‑center operators increasingly require fire‑safety verification from battery suppliers.
