Samsung and Applied Materials announce major AI-driven semiconductor initiatives
Samsung Electronics has unveiled a new AI infrastructure strategy focused on speed, scalability, and data persistence. At the OCP Global Summit 2026 in Silicon Valley, the company presented advancements in High Bandwidth Memory (HBM5), Compute Express Link (CXL) for memory expansion, and next-generation enterprise SSDs. Samsung also demonstrated a CXL-based memory pooling solution in collaboration with AMD to address the increasing data and cache demands of large-scale AI models.
Reports indicate that Samsung has secured long-term supply agreements for nearly 80% of its projected memory capacity for 2027, primarily serving major AI players including NVIDIA, Google, and Microsoft. These multi-year contracts aim to provide supply visibility for cloud and accelerator customers but may limit availability in the short-term spot market.
Separately, Applied Materials has opened its $5 billion EPIC Center in Silicon Valley. This massive facility is designed to accelerate semiconductor R&D by bringing chipmakers, equipment partners, and researchers together under one roof. The company aims to use AI tools to improve semiconductor yields and expects to double its revenue in the coming years through increased productivity and innovation, even without a proportional increase in headcount.
