Samsung seeks dismissal of Dua Lipa's $15 million lawsuit
Samsung has filed a motion in a California federal court seeking to dismiss a $15 million lawsuit brought by singer Dua Lipa regarding the unauthorized use of her image on television packaging.
The dispute centers on Samsung television boxes that feature a photograph of Lipa used to promote the Xite Hits channel, which is part of the Samsung TV Plus service. Samsung's legal team argues that the lawsuit lacks merit, stating that the image is merely used to “illustrate applications and an example of content that can be found on the television” rather than suggesting a personal endorsement or promotion of the brand.
Samsung previously stated that it received “clear assurances” from a third-party content partner that all necessary permissions for the image's use, including on product packaging, had been secured. The company maintains that the image was used to reflect third-party content available on its platform and denies any intentional misuse.
