Samsung tests 60‑micron ultra‑thin glass for future Galaxy Z Fold 9

Samsung is evaluating a new 60‑micron ultra‑thin glass (UTG) for its foldable smartphones. The thicker glass, an increase from the current 45‑micron standard, is intended to reduce the visible crease on folding displays. The first device to receive the 60‑micron UTG will be the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide, a model with a wider, passport‑style screen layout. If market feedback is positive, Samsung plans to extend the material to the Galaxy Z Fold 9, expected to launch around 2027.

Samsung’s 2026 foldable lineup targets annual shipments of 1.5‑2 million units for the Wide Fold, positioned as a technology‑validation model, while the Z Fold 8 Ultra aims for 2‑2.5 million units. The company is also refining the hinge mechanism and protective coatings alongside the glass upgrade to improve durability and visual quality.
