Samsung to slash Quantum Dot TV production amid Chinese competition
Samsung is significantly reducing the production of its Quantum Dot (QLED) televisions due to intense price competition from Chinese manufacturers such as TCL and Hisense. According to reports from the South Korean outlet Electronic Times, Samsung plans to cut QLED production from approximately 10 million units last year to between 2 and 3 million units this year.
The company has already removed its standard QLED line, which utilized LCD panels with LED backlighting and a quantum dot layer, replacing them with Mini LED models that lack the quantum dot layer. The reduction is also expected to impact the more expensive Neo QLED series; production for these models could be halved by next year, with a potential complete phase-out by 2028.
This strategic shift follows aggressive pricing from Chinese competitors who offer QLED-branded devices that reportedly use minimal or no quantum dot material. Samsung is instead focusing its premium efforts on OLED technology and Mini LED models to avoid the price wars characteristic of the LCD segment.
