Samsung warns RAM shortage will keep device prices rising through 2028
Samsung Electronics said the global shortage of DRAM and high‑bandwidth memory (HBM) is expected to persist until at least 2028, driven by soaring AI demand. The company warned that the scarcity will continue to push up prices for smartphones, tablets, laptops and other consumer electronics.
The shortage has already forced Samsung to raise prices on its Galaxy smartphones and tablets, and Apple has followed by increasing prices for MacBook, Mac and iPad models. Nvidia also plans to lift GPU prices by 20‑30%, adding further cost pressure.
In its latest quarterly report Samsung’s mobile division posted its first operating loss, while the semiconductor division recorded a record operating profit of about $61.7 billion. Samsung, together with SK Hynix and Micron, supplies roughly 75% of the world’s RAM, and the company says new capacity will not be available before 2028 because building HBM factories takes 18‑24 months.
