Samsung warns memory shortage to worsen through 2027, lasting to 2028

Samsung Electronics said the global RAM shortage will intensify in 2027 and remain severe through at least 2028, driven by soaring AI demand and constrained DRAM capacity. The company plans to secure 60‑70 % of its memory output with long‑term contracts for major data‑center operators, aiming to stabilise supply despite the tight market.

TrendForce forecasts a divergence in 2027: DRAM supply will stay limited, keeping prices high, while NAND flash production is expected to grow in the second half of the year, easing price pressure. AI‑driven workloads are identified as the primary catalyst for memory demand through 2027.

The shortage is already pushing up component costs for smartphones and tablets. Samsung has begun passing higher memory prices to consumers, raising the price of its Galaxy devices, and Apple has similarly increased Mac prices. Qualcomm announced a price increase for all Snapdragon mobile processors effective 1 September, citing rising manufacturing costs and supply‑chain constraints, which will further lift smartphone prices worldwide.
