Samsun's Çarşamba district sees rise in American-type walnut production

In the Çarşamba district of Samsun, interest in producing American-type walnut varieties is increasing as an alternative to hazelnut cultivation. Agricultural engineer Onur Sezer, who manages approximately 25 decares of walnut orchards in the Çarşamba Plain, highlighted the high yield potential of thin-shelled varieties such as Chandler, Pedro, and Tulare.

Despite the potential, Sezer noted that this year's harvest is lower than last year due to spring cold spells and fruit drop during the summer months. Additionally, the humid climate of the region presents challenges, specifically increasing the risk of diseases and making maintenance more difficult. Sezer also observed that the walnut market is still developing and does not yet have the established pricing structure seen in other agricultural products.
