Samuel Beckett biography 'La amistad' published in Spain
A new biography titled "La amistad de Beckett (1979-1989)" was written by André Bernold and translated by Anne‑Hélène Suárez Girard. It is being released by Ediciones del Subsuelo in Barcelona in 2026, spans 101 pages and is priced at 17 euros.
The book recounts a period in the early 1960s when the Irish writer Samuel Beckett, already a celebrated playwright, helped a Paris carpenter by driving the carpenter’s teenage son to school each morning in his blue Citroën 2CV. The son turned out to be André Roussimoff, who later achieved worldwide fame as the wrestler and actor André the Giant. Beckett kept the promise throughout the school year despite the inconvenience to his own schedule.
Additional chapters describe Beckett’s later habit of holding informal meetings with writers at a café on Montparnasse, and provide biographical details of his life from his birth in Dublin in 1906 to his death in Paris in 1989.
