Argentina faces global criticism over alleged racism during 2026 World Cup final

Hollywood actor Samuel L. Jackson posted an Instagram story urging Black people not to support Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, describing the country as "one of the most racist, if not the most racist, nations in the world." The post featured a digitally altered image of his Django Unchained character Stephen wearing an Argentine jersey. The message sparked a wide debate on social media, drawing condemnation for its sweeping generalisation and prompting rebuttals from Argentine figures, including former legislator Rebeca Fleitas, who called Jackson "ignorant" and highlighted the United States' own history of slavery and segregation.

During the same final, which Spain won 1‑0, several incidents of racist behaviour by Argentine fans were reported. Brazilian journalist William Tales of Band was called a "monkey" on live television by an Argentine spectator, and influencer IShowSpeed was targeted with racist insults and objects thrown by fans. FIFA opened investigations into these incidents. The controversy has amplified discussion about racism in sport and the responsibilities of public figures when commenting on such issues.
