Actor Samuel Monroe Jr., recognized for his roles in 1990s Black cinema, has died at age 52. His death was confirmed by his mother, Joyce Patton, who announced on Facebook that ‘today God called him home.’

Monroe Jr. had been battling severe health complications for several months, including bacterial meningitis, MRSA pneumonia, kidney failure, and neurological issues. His family reported that the meningitis, contracted while filming in Las Vegas, went undiagnosed for months, leading to brain and spinal cord inflammation. During his illness, he underwent multiple brain surgeries and was placed on life support.

His career was highlighted by his role in the 1993 film ‘Menace II Society’ and appearances in ‘The Players Club,’ ‘Set It Off,’ and ‘Tales From The Hood.’

In the days leading up to his death, a legal dispute emerged between his mother and his wife, Shawna Stewart, regarding his care and finances. Patton had filed for conservatorship, questioning the legality of Monroe’s marriage to Stewart, while Stewart maintained that Monroe did not want his mother in charge of his medical or financial decisions.
