Samuel Tweah defends academic standards in Liberia

Former Liberian Finance and Development Planning Minister Samuel Tweah has advocated for maintaining high academic standards, warning that lowering examination requirements to increase pass rates could harm the nation's future.

Speaking at the Mother Tegeste Stewart School graduation in Brewerville, Tweah addressed the discrepancy between the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the University of Liberia entrance exams. He argued that rather than making university admissions easier, the country must focus on strengthening the overall learning process.

Tweah cautioned against a culture of accommodation in the education system, stating, “If we lower the standard so that more people can pass WASSCE or UL entrance, we are hurting the future of the country.” He further noted a declining appetite for knowledge in Liberia, urging students to prioritize genuine learning over the pursuit of quick success.
