Samuele Spinelli death in Barcelona prompts autopsy and police investigation
Samuele Spinelli, a 27‑year‑old Florentine, died on 1 June 2026 after being detained by police in Barcelona on 29 May. Video footage shows him restrained on the floor, held prone for about 40 minutes, bound with straps, and administered midazolam before suffering cardiac arrest and being taken to hospital.
The Rome public prosecutor’s office, led by Francesco Brando, opened a case against unknown persons and will file the autopsy results in mid‑September. The family, represented by lawyer Diego Capano, is seeking clarification, noting bruises and injuries on the body. Italian Democratic Party representative Luca Milani expressed solidarity with the family.
Spanish medical examiners have cited multi‑organ failure possibly linked to a methamphetamine overdose, while the family disputes this cause. Autopsies are being conducted in both Barcelona and Florence, and the investigation continues with video evidence and witness statements.
