San Andreas Fault reaches highest tectonic strain in 1,000 years

New geological research indicates that the San Andreas Fault and its neighbor, the San Jacinto Fault, have accumulated their highest levels of tectonic strain in 1,000 years. This heightened tension has renewed scientific concern regarding the 'Big One,' a potentially devastating megathrust earthquake in California.

Geophysicist Liliane Burkhard of the University of Bern identified the Cajon Pass as a critical 'earthquake gate.' This intersection could either block a rupture or allow it to connect both fault systems, potentially resulting in a single event with a magnitude of approximately 7.5. Such an event would pose a significant risk to the nearly 13 million people living in the region.

Additionally, studies from San Jose State University show that the northern segment of the San Andreas Fault, specifically through the Santa Cruz Mountains, is moving faster than previous models suggested. This increased slip rate could lead to more frequent seismic activity.

Scientists also highlighted the phenomenon of 'dynamic activation,' where seismic waves from distant, large-scale earthquakes can travel through the Earth's crust and trigger movements on remote, highly pressurized faults like the San Andreas.
