Colombia to establish maritime baselines for San Andrés archipelago
President Abelardo De La Espriella has announced that the Colombian government will issue a decree on November 30, 2026, to officially establish maritime baseline coordinates for the San Andrés, Providencia, and Santa Catalina archipelago. This measure aims to formalize the country's territorial waters and reefs in the Caribbean, incorporating precise coordinates into official nautical charts to strengthen national sovereignty.
The decision follows decades of technical omissions regarding the islands' maritime boundaries, despite the mainland's coordinates being established in 1984. In a separate development, the President has requested a coordinated investigation by the Procuraduría, Contraloría, and Fiscalía into alleged corruption within the archipelago's administration. This follows reports of irregular contracting patterns and local interference with government-ordered interventions, such as at the Departmental Hospital. To support the region, the government announced an investment exceeding 35,000 million pesos for housing, water, and sanitation, including plans for 100 housing solutions in Providencia.
