San Antonio City Council restores Durango Boulevard name

The San Antonio City Council voted unanimously to rename Cesar Chavez Boulevard back to Durango Boulevard. The decision follows a months-long process triggered by investigative reports alleging sexual misconduct and abuse by the late labor leader.

The renaming affects a five-mile stretch of road between Southwest 36th Street and South Hackberry Street, impacting approximately 295 addresses. The project is estimated to cost roughly $375,000 to replace over 100 signs, including ground-mounted, streetlight-mounted, and highway signage. Funding for the replacement is expected to come from the city’s fiscal year 2026 General Fund budget.

The council's decision was informed by a citywide survey in which 64% of respondents supported the Durango name, while 79% of residents living along the corridor favored the restoration. The move follows similar actions in other Texas cities, such as Houston, which also voted to rename a street honoring Chavez.
