San Antonio la Isla landfill concerns prompt calls for waste reform
Residents of San Antonio la Isla and Calimaya are expressing concern regarding the local landfill, citing foul odors and heavy truck traffic. The situation has prompted Morena deputies to call for a review of waste management practices in the State of Mexico.
Deputy Gerardo Pliego Santana noted that Toluca is one of the primary municipalities depositing waste at the site. He suggested that the odors may indicate inefficient management of organic matter, which can lead to the production of gases and harmful fauna. Pliego Santana proposed transitioning from a confinement-based model to one focused on recycling and energy recovery, such as using organic matter to produce biogas and electricity. He also advocated for legislative changes to mandate waste separation by municipalities.
