San Antonio port transport strike threatens Chilean fruit exports
An indefinite strike by independent transporters in San Antonio, Chile, has entered its fifth day, causing significant disruptions to port logistics. The Agreporsai union has blocked access to extra-port warehouses since October 28, preventing the movement of approximately 3,000 containers and paralyzing nearly 200 machines. The strike has left terminals DP World and STI operating above normal saturation levels.
Negotiations between the union and port companies have reached a standstill. Agreporsai president Manuel Araya dismissed a recent offer from Maersk as a “mockery,” noting that the proposed increase of 1,000 pesos per trip is insufficient. The transporters are demanding updated freight rates to account for doubled fuel costs since 2022, the removal of TAG gantries on Route 78, and direct negotiation with central government authorities.
The strike coincides with the peak season for fresh fruit exports, particularly cherries destined for China. Antonio Walker, president of the National Agriculture Society (SNA), warned that the blockade threatens the cold chain necessary for food distribution. The agricultural sector is already facing challenges from high energy costs, El Niño weather patterns, and a 12.5% tariff on Chilean products applied by the United States.
