San Bartolomé Doxey ejido denies land use for Flower Fair
The upcoming Feria de las Flores and the seventh edition of the ‘Corriendo entre las Flores’ athletic race in San Bartolomé Doxey face logistical uncertainty following a decision by the local ejido assembly. The ejido leadership, headed by Fortunato López Melquíades, announced that they will not authorize the use of communal lands or roads for these events, stating that the activities are currently unaffiliated with the agrarian core.
While the ejido has denied permission for the festival and race scheduled for October 17 and 18, organizers from the San Bartolomé Doxey flower growers association have indicated that the events will not be canceled. Instead, they plan to modify the logistics to avoid using unauthorized paths. The traditional sale of flowers by local producers is expected to continue as usual during the last week of October.
The conflict follows a breakdown in coordination; organizers claim they had been attempting to work with ejidal authorities since May, while the ejido maintains that the events have become separate from the community's interests. The municipal government of Tlaxcoapan has not yet issued a formal statement regarding the dispute.
