San Carlos Mayor defends Mendoza energy subsidies

Alejandro Morillas, the mayor of San Carlos in Mendoza, is campaigning against potential cuts to the ‘Zona Fría’ (Cold Zone) energy subsidy regime. He argues that the national government must maintain these benefits to protect residents in high-altitude areas who rely on gas subsidies during winter.

Morillas stated that local mayors have firsthand knowledge of the extreme temperatures in specific parts of Mendoza and that any reduction in the regime would directly impact vulnerable sectors. He has already presented these concerns to Senator Patricia Bullrich.

The mayor’s stance aligns with Ulpiano Suárez, the mayor of Mendoza City, who has expressed similar views. This local push comes amid national negotiations where the government has reportedly reached agreements with governors from the Norte Grande region regarding summer electricity subsidies, a move that could potentially lead to modifications in the Cold Zone regime that affect Mendoza.
