San Cristóbal de Las Casas suspends garbage collection

The municipal cleaning department in San Cristóbal de Las Casas has suspended garbage collection services without prior notice to the public. This suspension has led to waste accumulating in various parts of the city, affecting streets frequently visited by domestic and foreign tourists. In some areas, animals have scattered debris after breaking into bags.

While the municipal government stated the suspension is temporary and urged residents not to place trash in public spaces, no official reason for the stoppage has been provided. Unofficial sources suggest the disruption is due to a labor protest by the Single Union of Municipal Workers of San Cristóbal de Las Casas (Sutram). The union is reportedly protesting the administration of Mayor Fabiola Ricci Diestel, alleging failure to fulfill commitments, specifically regarding the delivery of promised garbage collection trucks.
