San Cristóbal highlights ecotourism and historical heritage in Dominican Republic

San Cristóbal, a province in the Dominican Republic located near the capital, is positioned as a significant destination for historical, cultural, and ecological tourism. Recognized as an Ecotourism Province under Law 40-23, the region offers diverse attractions including beaches such as Playa Palenque, Playa Najayo, and Playa Los Cuadritos, as well as mountains and rivers.

Historically, the province is known as the ‘Cradle of the Constitution’ because the first Constitution of the Dominican Republic was signed at the Municipal Town Hall on November 6, 1844. Key landmarks include the Sagrado Corazón de Jesús Church and the Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Consolación, which is referred to as the ‘Sistine Chapel of the Caribbean’ due to its murals by Spanish artist Vela Zanetti. This site also contains the mausoleum where Rafael Leónidas Trujillo was temporarily buried in 1961. Additionally, the Pomier or Borbón Caves feature indigenous rock art with over 6,000 paintings.
