San Diego adjusts beach volleyball start times to 6 a.m
The City of San Diego has agreed to adjust municipal regulations regarding beach volleyball, allowing players to begin matches at 6 a.m. instead of the previously enforced 8 a.m. start time.
The decision follows a dispute that began in late April when park rangers warned athletes at South Mission Beach that playing before 8 a.m. could result in citations intended to protect residents from noise disturbances. In response, the local volleyball community launched an online petition that garnered nearly 3,000 signatures to advocate for earlier access.
Joya Patel, spokesperson for Mayor Todd Gloria, confirmed that the revised start time will be applied consistently across other city beach volleyball locations, including Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach, and La Jolla Shores. While the Mission Beach Town Council had previously suggested relocating courts to mitigate noise, the city stated it is not pursuing relocation at this time.
