San Diego colleges respond to ICE activity near campuses

Educational institutions in San Diego are responding to concerns regarding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity near their campuses.

At UC San Diego, student advocacy groups, including the Student Civil Liberties Union and the Ellis Collective, alleged that ICE used university property near Eighth College as a staging ground for operations on August 3. The groups suggested the activity was related to an investigation into a boat found near La Jolla shores. However, UC San Diego officials stated that no federal immigration enforcement activities were confirmed to have taken place on campus property during those incidents.

Separately, the San Diego Community College District (SDCCD) is implementing new safety measures following an incident where ICE officers were seen near San Diego City College and arrested a driver in a vehicle containing students. In response, the district plans to install 68 signs prohibiting ICE entrance on campus grounds. Additionally, the SDCCD will utilize the RAVE emergency alert system to notify students via text message when ICE presence is detected on campus and when they have departed.
