San Diego County to open new Santee animal shelter

San Diego County Animal Services is scheduled to open a new animal shelter in Santee on October 15. This opening will coincide with the permanent closure of the existing Bonita shelter, as all sheltering operations from Bonita will transition to the new Santee location.

The new Santee facility is designed to provide enhanced care through upgraded medical and surgical suites, modern kennels with improved ventilation and natural light, and dedicated isolation and quarantine areas. The facility also includes outdoor play yards, enrichment areas, and a new adoption lounge.

Ahead of the transition, county officials are encouraging the public to adopt or foster animals currently housed at the Bonita shelter. Officials stated that increasing adoption rates before the move will reduce stress for the animals, streamline the relocation process for staff, and help pets avoid the challenges of transporting and adjusting to a new environment. While sheltering operations are moving, field services and licensing for residents near Bonita will continue. The county's Carlsbad shelter will also remain in operation.
