San Diego FC revives Willie Henderson park with community sports program

San Diego FC, in partnership with Adriana’s Insurance, launched the Park & Pitches initiative to renovate the courts at the Willie Henderson Sports Complex in Southcrest, San Diego (ZIP 92113). The project transformed a space that had been avoided for years because of gang activity and drug dealing into a vibrant community hub.

During a block‑party event, families gathered around newly painted courts, inflatable play structures, foosball tables and a small petting zoo. Children like nine‑year‑old Erick played freely while parents watched. One resident, Lilia, said, “We can never come to the park because it’s dangerous, especially when it starts getting dark.” The revitalized park now hosts regular neighborhood gatherings, offering a safe environment for recreation and social connection.
