San Diego fishermen catch record-breaking 648-pound blue marlin

A fishing crew off the coast of San Diego has caught a 648-pound blue marlin, setting a new record at Fishermen’s Landing. The catch, made approximately 40 miles offshore, surpassed the previous local weight record of approximately 598 pounds.

Captain Alec Stockfelt led the crew aboard his 65-foot sportfishing vessel. Due to the massive size of the fish, nearly all crew members were required to help haul the marlin onto the boat. Once verified, the catch is expected to enter the official California sports fishing record books, significantly exceeding the previous blue marlin record of 395 pounds set in 2021.

Local experts suggest that El Niño weather patterns may lead to more unusual and exotic marine life sightings in the region, potentially resulting in more record-breaking catches during the current season.
