San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria announces affordability tour amid fiscal scrutiny

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria, who serves as president of the United States Conference of Mayors, has announced a national affordability tour to address the rising cost of living in American cities. The announcement follows a local management crisis in which the city admitted to trash fee errors affecting more than 87,000 customers. Some residents received property tax bills that were up to $2,700 higher than expected due to these errors.

Critics have pointed to the billing error as a sign of broader fiscal mismanagement in San Diego. The city has recently faced a $118 million deficit driven by rising expenses, including office renovations and increased middle management payroll. In response to the cash shortfall, the city has implemented measures such as charging for parking in Balboa Park.
