San Diego Navy veteran family found dead in San Carlos home
A San Diego family of three was found dead from apparent gunshot wounds in their San Carlos home on September 16. The victims have been identified as 56-year-old Navy veteran David Voight, his wife Amy Voight, 54, and their 13-year-old daughter, Mya Jane Voight.
David Voight was a highly decorated Navy warrant officer who served approximately 30 years, including roles in explosive ordnance disposal in Iraq and Afghanistan. Amy Voight worked as a digital forensic examiner for the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.
According to the victims' relatives, Amy Voight had sought assistance from a Department of Veterans Affairs clinic on September 15, the day before the deaths, to address David's deteriorating mental health and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. The family reported that Amy had asked for help regarding David's anxiety and depression, but was told that counselors were busy and an appointment was necessary.
San Diego police stated there is no known threat to the public and no outstanding suspect. While authorities have not formally classified the incident as a murder-suicide, a firearm was recovered from the residence. The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office is expected to determine the official causes and manners of death.
