San Diego Padres defeat Houston Astros 3-2

The San Diego Padres defeated the Houston Astros 3-2 on Saturday night at Petco Park, moving within one game of the National League's final wild-card spot.

Jackson Merrill provided the decisive offensive spark, hitting his 17th home run of the season—a 421-foot solo shot in the third inning off Astros starter Peter Lambert. Merrill has shown significant resurgence since the All-Star break, raising his batting average from .219 to .242 while hitting seven home runs in 22 games.

On the mound, Michael King pitched six innings, allowing only one earned run while striking out six. Mason Miller secured his 29th save of the season despite allowing a run in the ninth inning. For the Astros, Taylor Trammell hit a solo home run, and Yainer Diaz drove in a run late in the game, but Houston could not complete the comeback.

Astros starter Peter Lambert took the loss after allowing three runs in five innings. The series concludes Sunday with Cristian Javier expected to pitch for Houston.
