San Diego Police Department explores AI for police reports

The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) is exploring the use of artificial intelligence to assist officers and investigators in writing police reports. A request for information issued on July 31 indicates the department is seeking programs that utilize AI technology to enhance efficiency, with the aim of allowing officers to respond more quickly to calls for service.

The initiative is currently in an exploration phase, intended for information gathering and planning rather than a formal request for proposals. The estimated contract value for such a program is projected to be between $500,000 and $3 million. Any potential implementation would require officers to maintain control over the content and structure of their reports.

This move follows a December policy that prohibited the use of generative AI for report writing. SDPD spokesperson Ashley Nicholes stated that the department is looking for ways to maximize efficiency, particularly to address staffing shortages of frontline officers by reducing time spent on administrative tasks.
