San Diego police K-9 and officers burned during fatal bookstore standoff
A violent confrontation in San Diego’s North Park neighborhood resulted in the death of a suspect and injuries to a police K-9 and three officers. The incident began Wednesday morning when San Diego police responded to reports of a person attempting to break into vehicles on the 2900 block of 30th Street.
Following a foot pursuit, the suspect entered a nearby adult bookstore. Authorities stated the suspect possessed flammable liquid and used a makeshift blowtorch to attack officers and a K-9 named Ryder. Police initially deployed bean bags to subdue the individual, but the situation escalated into an officer-involved shooting.
Three officers were treated for burns and subsequently released. The K-9, Ryder, sustained burns to his face but was released from a veterinary hospital with an expected full recovery. The suspect allegedly set himself on fire during the standoff before being fatally shot.
